The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) today announced the much-anticipated release of its 2011 Chicago Department of Aviation Sustainability Report, which highlights the CDA's industry-leading sustainability accomplishments.

"Chicago is on the cutting edge of national efforts to make airports greener," said CDA Commissioner Rosemarie S. Andolino. "The CDA is fully committed to incorporating sustainability initiatives at our airports and is proud of our efforts and accomplishments to date."

The CDA is well-known in the aviation industry for its development of the Sustainable Airport Manual (SAM), which guides the implementation of sustainable initiatives at O'Hare and Midway International airports and has served as a guide for other airports. With the new 2011 Sustainability Report, the CDA is able to highlight the accomplishments at Chicago's airports that have saved energy, reduced air emissions, conserved water, salvaged and recycled materials, and kept construction waste and water bottles out of landfills.

Beginning in 2003, the CDA has led the industry by incorporating sustainability considerations into design and construction projects, and more recently into every aspect of Chicago's airports, from operations and maintenance to concessions and tenants. CDA's accomplishments include the installation of vegetated green roofs; partnering with a neighborhood jobs training program to install the largest airport apiary (beehives) at O'Hare; installing electric vehicle charging stations; installing wind turbines; and supporting US Green Building Council LEED certified building development.
